50th Anniversary |
This
year's festival
commemorates 50 years of
athletics coaching
conferences in Europe,
find out the history
behind IFAC
IFAC
2010 celebrates 50 years
of the European
Athletics Coaches
Association [EACA].
The
Rome Olympics in 1960
was a major turning
point in athletics
history, as Europe moved
out of the USA shadow.
In 1956, USA had 16 gold
medals, Europe 11. In
1960, USA had 12, Europe
19. And in the 34
events, 30 new Olympic
records were set – eight
of them world records
The
major influence in these
changes and improvements
was focus on coaching
and the emerging world
of the performance
sciences. Europe was
leading the way in this
and intended to continue
doing so.
So a
visionary group of
leading European coaches
met in Vincennes, Paris.
They agreed to create
EACA for the development
of athletics coaching
and to support coach
education.
Vincennes, then, was the
first EACA Conference,
which has now been
hosted in more than
twenty cities across
Europe. This year is the
33rd conference.
The
EACA conference title
was changed in 2009 to
the International
Festival of Athletics
Coaching [IFAC] to
reflect the overall
learning opportunity and
the excitement of
building knowledge
alliances and networks
across the globe.
The
50th anniversary will be
celebrated not only in
the continuing highest
quality of keynote
presentations and
workshops but in
launching a dedicated
‘Teachers Programme’ and
recognising some of the
great coaching icons who
have been part of
ensuring Europe’s
outstanding performance
record over these 50
years.

International Festival of
Athletics Coaching - Teachers
|
Schools athletics and
the link with the young
athlete development
programme in clubs are
the seed-bed of the
sport in educating
athletes for the sport
and through the sport
for a better life.
In
recognition of the
teachers’ vital role in
athlete participation,
development and
performance,
IFAC is launching
a dedicated programme
for teachers at the 2010
event in Glasgow
(Marriott Hotel)
29-31 October.
In
addition to focused
workshops with a range
of experts such as Per
Jutterstrom (Sweden),
there is an outstanding
line-up of keynote
speakers including
John Smith (USA),
certainly one of the
greatest sprints coaches
in athletics history.
The
national and
international networking
opportunity and
knowledge exchange over
the weekend will ensure
that teachers and
coaches are the richer
in their professional
roles. That has to be
great news for athletes
and for the sport.

INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF
COACHING 2010 |
|
Dr Frank
Dick, President
of EACA, is
delighted to announce
the launch of
IFAC 2010, which
will run
29-31 October
at the Marriot Hotel in
Glasgow, Scotland, and
celebrate the 50th
Anniversary of the
European Athletics
Coaches Association [EACA].
In Vincennes, Paris in
1960,
head coaches of
European athletics
federations founded the
world’s first Athletics
Coaches Association.
Since then, EACA’s
Conferences have brought
together thousands of
coaches, not only from
Europe but also
from the greater IAAF
Family, to enrich and
advance their
professional
development. IFAC takes
the concept of EACA
conferences to a whole
new level.
Firstly, the festival
features the finest
coaching and performance
experts in the world.
Recently announced,
John Smith (USA),
‘the sprints coach with
the Midas touch’ is to
head our line-up for
this year, find out more
about John’s attendance
this year in our news
section. We will
announce others keynote
speakers at regular
intervals through the
coming months in a lead
up to the event.
Next, the event offers a
wide range of high value
workshops, covering all
disciplines. We’ve
increased the number,
and variety, of
workshops since last
year, to deliver
something for all types
of attendees, whatever
their level of
experience or expertise
in athletics. We’re also
launching our first
stream of workshops
dedicated to teachers,
whose work provides a
foundation for athlete’s
development and
performance process.
Workshop details will be
published in the coming
weeks here on the IFAC
website.
Finally, the festival
generates an unmatched
opportunity to build and
energize
personal development
networks all the
way from club to
international level.
And, that, of course,
comes down to
individuals attending.
Last year’s event was a
huge success, with over
400 athletics coaches
and professionals
attending and providing
festival goers the
chance to rub shoulders
with the likes of Seb
Coe or Sergey Bubka, to
name a few.
IFAC has proven to be a
knowledge and learning
mall for athletics
worldwide.
And this year is no
exception; as Festival
Manager,
Mary Anderson,
and her team are putting
together something very
special so watch this
space for more
information as the event
draws near.
Put IFAC,
29-31 October, in
your diary and spread
the word. We look
forward to welcoming you
to Glasgow – host city
of the
2014 Commonwealth Games.

Festival of International
Coaching Website Launched |
|
As
the festival of international
coaching takes shape, the
organizers with support of the
EACA have launched the website
for this event which can be
found at the following address:
www.ifacscotland.co.uk
Following the launch of the
website, president of the EACA,
Mr. Frank Dick gave the
following speech:
It gives me great pleasure to
have this opportunity to invite
you to the first International
Festival of Athletics Coaching
in Glasgow.
It will give me even greater
pleasure to welcome you here.
2009 sees what was formerly the
European Athletics Coaches
Association (EACA) Conference
transformed into the Festival,
which will also embrace the
Scottish and Irish Annual
Coaches Conferences.
This now means that coaches are
offered a rich choice of options
to address their personal
development needs in their
commitment to coaching
excellence.
These options are built around
an outstanding line-up of
experts delivering the keynote
presentations.
I am, personally, and on behalf
of EACA Council, deeply grateful
to scottishathletics, UK
Athletics and European Athletics
for their generous support and
co-operation in making this
event possible.
Ewen Cameron, Festival Manager,
with his team from
scottishathletics, has
done a great job in putting the
program together and ensuring
that this will be a most
valuable and enjoyable
experience for you.
Glasgow, formerly European
Culture Capital, offers a
special blend of beauty,
character and history in its
unique brand of Scottish
hospitality. For sure, the city
will give you a very warm
welcome.
The 2009 Festival will see
Europe's largest ever assembly
of athletics coaches sharing
their experience and hunger to
learn from the extensive
knowledge menu on offer.
And that number will continue to
grow as the Festival becomes the
world's most important annual
meeting place and forum for all
coaches who live and breath the
passion of coaching.
I believe you are such a coach.
So, I look forward to seeing you
in Glasgow.
Dr Frank Dick
President
EACA
